These grants reduce the upfront costs of buying an electric car, making it a more feasible choice for individuals who are thinking of making the switch.
Electric Car Grant
In Ireland, there are key incentives aimed at making electric vehicles (EVs) more accessible and affordable for both individuals and businesses. By helping to cover some of the initial costs of buying an electric car, these grants make it easier for individuals and businesses to switch to a sustainable future.
For individuals, these grants reduce the upfront costs of buying an electric car, making it a more feasible choice for individuals who are thinking of making the switch. For businesses, especially those looking for an upgrade, electric car grants offer financial incentives that not only lower acquisition costs but also support corporate sustainability initiatives. The goal of the electric vehicle grants is to accelerate the transition away from traditional vehicles. In this blog post, you’ll learn everything you need to know about electric car grants.
Why switch to electric vehicles?
It doesn't come as a surprise to know about the various benefits of electric vehicles that go beyond just being environmentally friendly. EVs help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality, which are crucial for Ireland's efforts to combat climate change. Also, electric vehicles save you money on fuel and maintenance compared to traditional cars. But that’s not all! EVs provide better driving performance, quieter rides, and the convenience of home charging. These benefits make electric vehicles a smart and practical choice for drivers.
Electric car grants for commercially bought EVs
Businesses can get financial help when buying electric vehicles (EVs) for their operations. These grants reduce the initial costs, making it easier for companies to switch to electric. This section explains what grants are available, who can apply, and how they can assist businesses in making the switch to electric vehicles.
Eligibility criteria for a Electric Car grant
To qualify for electric vehicle grants, businesses need to meet certain criteria. SEAI offers grant support for businesses and public entities purchasing new N1 (light commercial vehicle) category electric vehicles. A maximum grant of €3,800 is available for qualifying N1S category electric vehicles (BEVs) bought for commercial use.
How to apply for the grant?
Applying for the electric vehicle grants might seem overwhelming at first, but it can be straightforward by following three easy steps:
- Choose the EV model you want.
- Visit your nearest dealer to take a test drive and make sure you’re satisfied with your choice.
- When you buy the vehicle, the dealer will usually handle the grant application for you. The grant amount will be deducted from the final price of your new electric vehicle. Don’t forget that Energia has partnered with Kia, Peugeot, Opel, Honda and Jeep so be sure to visit these dealerships first.
Grant amount and limitations
The amount of the grant can vary based on the type of vehicle and the type of grant. Generally, grants can cover a large part of the purchase price, sometimes up to several thousand euros per vehicle. However, there are some limitations to keep in mind. For example, you can only claim a grant for new N1S category electric vehicles bought for commercial use. Second-hand vehicles are not eligible for the grant. Also, EVs with a list price over €60,000 or under €14,000 are not eligible for the grant.
Electric car grants for privately owned vehicles
If you’re looking to buy an electric vehicle (EV) for personal use, you can also benefit from various grants and incentives. The Electric Vehicle Home Charger Grant is a government-funded program that helps homeowners install a charging point for their electric vehicle. You can receive up to €300 to cover the cost of buying and installing a home charger. If you buy your electric vehicle from one of the afore-mentioned car manufacturers, you can avail of a free home charger as well as 20% off renewable electricity.
Home charger grant: Criteria for eligibility
- The EV must be parked in an off-street location at your home, and the charger needs to be connected to your house.
- The Meter Point Reference Number (MPRN), found on your electricity bill, will be used to verify your home's location.
- You cannot apply if your property has already received a grant for an EV home charging point or if it had a free ESB Ecars home charger before 2018.
- You have 6 months from the date on the Letter of Offer to complete your installation. Do not proceed with any charger installation works before the start date on your SEAI Letter of Offer as you may not receive the full grant support available.
With Energia, you can get a FREE* EV home charger. We’ve partnered with Kia, Peugeot, Opel, Honda, Fiat, and JEEP to offer this to both new and existing customers. You’ll also enjoy 20% off renewable electricity.
Financial incentives for electric vehicles
There are extra financial incentives to make switching to an electric vehicle (EV) more appealing. These include lower Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) and motor tax for EV owners, which help save money and support Ireland's goal of sustainable future.
VRT reductions
Reduced Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) is a major financial benefit for electric vehicle (EV) buyers in Ireland. VRT is a one-time tax paid when you first register a vehicle, and it can significantly impact the overall cost of buying a car. These reductions are designed to make EVs more affordable by lowering the initial tax cost associated with registration. This means you pay less upfront when purchasing an EV compared to a traditional petrol or diesel car.
Who qualifies for VRT reductions?
If you buy a new or used electric vehicle, you are eligible for VRT reductions. Vehicles with an Open Market Selling Price (OMSP) of up to €40,000 are eligible for tax relief of up to €5,000. For vehicles with an OMSP between €40,000 and €50,000, the relief is reduced. There is no tax relief available for electric vehicles with an OMSP above €50,000.
Motor tax reductions
Electric vehicle (EV) owners benefit from reduced motor tax rates because EVs produce no emissions and fall into the lowest tax band. For a Battery Electric Vehicle, the annual motor tax is just €120. This tax reduction is designed to make owning an electric car more affordable and to encourage more people to make the switch.
